Pincher: A Playful and Innovative Salt and Pepper Dispenser

Redesigning the Seasoning Experience

More often than not, we use salt and pepper together but have a separate dispenser for each. We wanted to redesign the experience so that users didn't have to misplace either dispenser or require the use of any mechanisms and reduce the messiness of refilling.

Salt and pepper are rarely used separately. Pincher, designed by Sahar Madanat Design Studio, combines both in a smaller, one-handed, and more intuitive design. To switch between salt and pepper, simply flip and then pinch the outer walls to allow the seasoning of choice to flow. The harder one pinches, the more seasoning will flow.

The Pincher dispenser is always sealed until pressure is exerted on its walls, which forces a small incision in the bottom to open up. This gives the user much more control over the flow of the salt or pepper and makes it less messy to refill than conventional dispensers.

Developed further from the 'Flip' design, Pincher was created between March 2017 and August 2017. The design team at Sahar Madanat Design Studio drew inspiration from the flexible properties of silicone, studying the design of rubber toys that make noise, such as clown noses and rubber ducks. By applying a similar approach to the salt and pepper dispenser, they achieved favorable results.

During the testing phase, the design team observed that users tend to pinch the mid-section of Pincher, which, when full, prevented the spices from flowing. To solve this issue, designers added ergonomic indicators to either end of Pincher, creating a more intuitive design.

Pincher is made using HDPE and food-grade silicone, ensuring its safety for use in the kitchen. With its compact size of 130mm in length and 29mm radius, Pincher is a playful and flexible addition to any kitchenware collection.

This innovative design by Sahar Madanat Design Studio has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
